I am an urban geographer turned innovation consultant. Many urban policies, solutions and services don’t seem to work for, or appeal to, citizens. An innovative, value oriented mindset and the skills to work with – instead of for – communities are fundamental.

Not only chairs, websites or logo’s can be designed, but also solutions to complex challenges. The process based on a designers mindset to solve complex challenges is called design thinking. The approach takes a radical and holistic human-perspective to any challenge, to find new opportunities and design solutions.
Relevant stakeholders are treated as co-designers and together you work in a structured but flexible and iterative way. Phases include the discovery of insights into the problem and those concerned, to defining new opportunities and key challenges, cocreating new ideas and concepts, building prototypes to test if your solutions work before scaling up, and implementation. A set of innovative tools and visual communication enable a smooth process.
The challenges that cities are facing are increasingly interrelated and complex. Design Thinking allows you to find opportunities together with stakeholders and to focus on what matters to citizens or users. The use of design thinking has popularised enormously, its value proven by companies such as Spotify and AirBNB and now also in public administration.
I will be based in Colombia in 2019, to learn about the impressive urban development and social innovation of Medellin of the last two decades, and work on urban innovation.
